Can you create your own AI adventure?

AI, specifically, generative AI has come a long way. Almost 7 years ago, when I first started working professionally, I was dismissive of AI and convinced that it only made sense for those with really difficult problems, with a lot of time and money on their hands. Now, I would be wrong.

Current generative AI capability, and the price at which they are available, to the point where almost everyone can afford to take advantage of it in some way has gotten me thinking. It feels like the world is starting to change, and I wonder what the future looks like. I wonder what it could be used for.

There's a lot to talk about here, but my mind has been stuck on one idea for a while now. Can I use generative AI to create my own adventure? A video game that creates a world and a story as you play it. Something like the old text-based adventure games. But, with a twist.

In older text-based adventure games, you were presented with a world and opportunities to interact with it. You could move around, pick up items, and use them to solve puzzles and much more. But, the world and the story were pre-defined. You could only do what the game allowed you to do. You could only go where the game allowed you to go. You could only interact with the world in the ways the game allowed you to interact with it.

Sure, you had some choice in what to do. But, did these choices really have the consequence you expected? I've played a lot of modern games, and I really loved it when I could see the cumulative effect of my choices. But, those opportunities were few and far between. Once I'd played through it once, I knew what to expect. I'd already seen most of what the game had to offer.

I believe that AI can change that. With it, you no longer need a clunky set of commands to interact with the world. You can just talk to it. You can just say what you want to do, and the game will understand you. You can talk to the characters in it, and possibly build relationships. You can explore the world, and find new things to do. You can do anything you want. Sure, there will be limits. But, they will be much more natural. You'd need some outline to follow. But within those limits, you can do anything you want, and face the consequences of your actions.

Here's what I'm thinking:

I'm not sure how this will turn out. But, I'm excited to try it out. I think it will be a fun project to work on. I'll keep you posted!
